New York City and Mental Health
On November 13th, the New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released a report stating that 1 in 5 New Yorkers suffer from mental health problems. At least one in five adult New Yorkers suffer from depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, or other psychological disorders every year according to the report by Mayor Bill de Blasio. The Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene is going to release a plan called NYC Thrive, which is a plan to prevent and treat psychological disorders for the 8.4 million residents. The mayor did not comment on how much the NYC Thrive would cost or what/who it would involve. The plan is set to come out by the end of next month

Good first blog post Mr. Glessner! 1 in 5 New Yorkers suffer from mental health problems is a scary statistic. Maybe the business of the city translates to so much stress for people. I personally would not want to live in such a busy city such as NYC. Im interested to see about this plan coming out at the end of next month.
ReplyDeleteI think it is so important for people to really understand the number of people affected by mental health issues in our society. We are also learning about this in Dr. Nichols foundations class and I think it is one of the most important topics we could promote. Especially with all the research saying that physical activity can lower these risks of mental health problems.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Andrew! I really liked how you connected the mental aspect of health. Learning that 1 in 5 New Yorkers suffer from mental health issues is remarkable. Hopefuly New York can do something to improve this problem. Keep up the good work and I'll definitely keep reading your blog.

ReplyDeleteThis was a very interesting read! 1 in 5 seems so high for New York City, or anywhere really. Did the article say anything as to why it is so high? I think it will be interesting to NYC Thrive actually includes. Mental health seems to be a growing problem, so I think this will be a big deal when it is released.
ReplyDeleteThis was fascinating Andrew. Its unbelievable to think how many people have mental health problems when you consider how large that city really is. No one really discusses how serious mental health problems really are. I always knew that people had them but I never knew how prevalent they were. I'm really interested in this Thrive Program. It will be cool to see what the city does in the upcoming years.
ReplyDeleteNever knew this fact about New Yorkers. I find this study very fascinating. what is the large population of people facing this issue due to? is it the environment? Is it the big city? Is it the fast pace life style? what?
ReplyDeleteThis was interesting to read! It is hard to think how many people have mental problems living in a large city like New York City. People do not really talk about how serious mental health problems really are. These issues need to be taken seriously!
