Breastfeeding and Eyesight
In a recent study, researchers may have found an interesting link between breastfeeding and eyesight. Breastfeeding may help protect premature infants from a common eye disease that can lead to blindness. Retinopathy is a condition where abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina, which increases the chance of detachment. The researchers analyzed over 2,200 infants comparing breastfeeding and formula feeding. Any amount of breastfeeding played a protective role in preventing this eye disease, but exclusive or mainly breastfeeding was associated with significant benefits in preventing this serious disease. The researchers say that these findings may be related to the antioxidant and immune system properties that is found in breast milk along with vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene.

That is an awesome research study that you found, Andrew! It is something different that I have not heard about. I had no idea that breastfeeding could be so beneficial for infants' eyes! I personally was a formula baby and my eyes are fine, thank goodness. However, this study may impact my decision about how I raise my own children.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post. I did not realize that this study took place. This is a great post for us to realize, as many of us will be trying to meet some women and have kids in the near future. We need to let people know about this, this was a great find.
